“At her words, I closed my eyes, began to sway. As the beat got faster, so did I. I let go of my pain, insecurities, and worry. The freedom was exhilarating, and it felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders.”
Lost is the story of an orphaned Caelian girl, Sadie, who goes on a dangerous journey of self-discovery. Along the way we meet her amazing group of friends, Caelian and norm alike. Caelians are humans, but their genes have been altered by a meteor event that happened after WWI. These altered genes give them unique physical characteristics as well as things called Talents. Think X-Men, but no super-hero type action.
If I were a teenage girl, I would be in heaven. This book is great! It has a quickly-paced fantastical narrative, characters that I want to be friends with, a sparkly romance, and secrets and danger galore. Winny wins!
The writing in this is also pretty good. No overwrought declarations of romance, very few errors (the errors I noticed were typographical in nature), mostly believable characters and situations. My only quibble was that I found it odd for high school-age students to be going to frat parties, but I don’t know, maybe that happens more than I realize.
I’m almost thirty, so this almost felt too young for me, but I still enjoyed every minute of it. And yes, I may have squealed with delight at the mushy gushy parts even though that’s something I normally hate. I can not wait to find out what happens to Sadie next!
If you like X-Men type characters, a dash of romance, high school/college settings, danger and intrigue…give this a read!
I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
