Ten Books that Made Me Laugh
Ummm, I don’t read a lot of make-you-laugh books, so I’m only going to list five books here. Definitely check these out though. They are awesome-sauce and winny-wins!
- You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day. I will never stop extolling the virtues of the incomparable Felicia Day. She’s amazeballs, and if you don’t know who she is…please fix that ASAP.
- Yes Please by Amy Poehler. Another truly hilarious, and incredibly thoughtful, lady whom I adore!
- Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews. The humor is questionable/offensive at times, but there is no denying that this book made me LOL A LOT.
- Pianist in a Bordello by Mike C. Erickson. A humorous, political satire by an indie author. Good smart/funny stuff here.
- Candide by Voltaire. You know, for throwback’s sake. A little satire from 1759. It’s better in French FYI.
I’ll finish up with five funny books I’m dying to read, but haven’t gotten around to because my TBR is like 900 books long at this point. 😀
- Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
- Bossypants by Tina Fey
- Paddle Your Own Canoe by Nick Offerman
- Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari
- Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham
Are you sensing a theme here? I really like comedians and anyone who was on the shows SNL, Parks & Rec, The Office, and Girls…good stuff!
Comic novels are tough, because, unlike straight writing, they’re going for a specific response. General fiction can be subtle, nuanced, leave you to figure stuff out. Humour: you’re going for yuks, and not everyone responds the same way. I’m currently reading Number 10 by Sue Townsend, who wrote the very funny Adrian Mole books. This, however, is cranky more than funny. Speaking of cranky, I find myself getting cross at comic novels that aren’t comic. Books that have made me laugh: The Hitchhiker’s Guide books, Barney’s Version by Mordecai Richler, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Nicholson Baker is a very funny author but in an amazed “I never perceived things that way” way. (What a terrible sentence!)

I also included 5 tbrs in my list. Had trouble coming up with ten. I love Felicia Day! Didn’t know she had a book until today. Definitely gonna read that.

I keep saying I’m going to read the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler books but haven’t done it yet A Confederacy of Dunces is the book I refer to for a laugh, but it’s more of a “watching-a-train-wreck-please-don’t-do-that-face-palm” kind of humor. Lots of eye rolling and groaning. I’m intrigued by Pianist in a Bordello- time to go check that out! Thanks!

If you do get to Amy Poehler’s book, I recommend the audiobook that she narrates herself. It just really takes it to the next level! Haha, I love your description of A Confederacy of Dunces. May have to check that out now 🙂
Definitely check out Pianist in a Bordello! It’s especially appropriate right now with all the election craziness.

Bossypants and both of Mindy Kaling’s books are awesome. Aziz Ansari’s book made me chuckle at times, but it was more of an interesting look at dating in the modern age. I love those Parks and Rec and Office alums too!

So glad to meet another Parks and Office fan! 😀 Keep being awesome!
